Dr. Nick Yphantides of Palomar Pomerado Health introduced us to the facilities and workshopped with us to create an ongoing cooperative partnership with Palomar College and Poway High School districts. He is a celebrity in health care because six years ago ( when he weighed 467 pounds) he took a sabbatical, touring every baseball park in the continental U.S. in his r.v. and lost more than half his body weight in less than a year. Dr. Nick, as he likes to be called, met with us throughout our week long tour of the various facilities that he oversees. One of the most interesting and educational of Dr. Nick's tours was to the Neighborhood Health Care Center of Escondido, where the staff provides heathcare to the poor and uninsured populations in Escondido. The facility's waiting room was usually full to capacity. Under what appeared to be a highly demanding task, the staff were remarkably calm and competent. Neighborhood Health Care is looking for student volunteers to work in the facility, located at 460 Elm Street, Escondido, CA 92025; phone (760) 737-2000.

On a visit to Villa Pomerado, a Skilled Nursing Facility, Nick Mixon, (second from left) described to us (from left, Lisa Romain, Mary Perez and Fergal O'Doherty) the importance of "soft skills" for staff. Villa Pomerado has a pet visitation program. Patients with dogs can have visits. Patients who request a visit from a trained companion dog benefit from the visit. Several programs to benefit patients are on the lookout for motivated volunteer students. (High School students are called "Red Shirts" and College students, "Blue Shirts." Mr. Mixon and all the administrative staff and faculty members noted how beneficial and empowering these volunteer positions are for prospective employees.

We were reminded to keep our voices lowered in the hospital environment for the sake of patient comfort.

The Maternity Care Unit looks more like a five star spa suite. Each room has reclining chairs for family sleep-overs, a jaccuzzi, private bathroom. This is the view from the room we toured.

Dennis Lin (Chemistry Teacher, Poway High School) is visibly impressed with the feng shui and functionality of the maternity ward.

Thomas Offerman, Manager of Radiology and Imaging Services at Pomerado Hospital (Second from left), shows us the latest Philips x-ray and imaging technology. We were struck by the spacious rooms and calming ambience.

Dennis, Mary and Lisa had a "Wheel of Fortune" moment.

While Fergal had a "For less than the price of your daily Frappaccino, You too can have this beautiful CT Scanner installed in your own home" moment.

On a more serious and even stunningly illustrative note, Craig saw the detail of a heart CT scan.

A closer look at the detailed examination that the CT scan can perform on a heart without surgery.

A laboratory presentation illustrated (with some creative license!) the importance of detecting intestinal bacteria.

On Thursday, July 26th, LaDainian Tomlinson of the San Diego Chargers visited Pomerado Hospital for a press conference. We happened to be there and helped a patient from Villa Pomerado, Darren Hoffer, to get his Chargers shirt autographed by "LT." It was a touching moment in the blizzard of paparazzi who swarmed the hospital that day. Mary Perez glows behind Darren.

We learned that in health care, technological know-how is insufficient without the soft-skills of sensitivity, empathy and compassion.
